In practice there are four different repairs hiding behind the phrase pothole repair, they cost different amounts of labor, they last wildly different lengths of time, and the one that is right for your property depends less on the size of the hole than on what is underneath it. Start with the hole, not the method

Before anybody talks about materials, the question worth answering is how deep the problem goes. A pothole is a symptom. It tells you that at some point, water got below the surface, softened the material supporting it, and traffic finished the job. What it does not tell you by itself is whether that soft material is a two inch layer or a foot of saturated subgrade.

The fastest way to find out is to probe it. Loose broken asphalt at the bottom of a hole with firm, dry material under that usually means the failure is confined to the surface course. Wet base that gives under a shovel, or material that pumps up as a truck rolls past, means the structure is compromised and the hole you are looking at is the small visible end of a larger area.

The second thing we read is the pattern around it. A single isolated hole in otherwise sound pavement is a different animal from a hole sitting in the middle of a patch of interconnected cracking. Interconnected cracking that looks like the back of a dried lake bed is a base failure signature, and where you see one hole in it, more are coming. Repairing just the hole in that situation is patching a symptom while the cause stays in place.

Third, we look at where the water comes from. Low spots that hold water after a monsoon cell, downspouts discharging onto pavement, sprinkler overspray, landscape beds sitting higher than the asphalt, and grade that got altered by a previous resurfacing are all common in Hobbs, and all of them will defeat a good patch given enough time.

Cold patch: the stopgap, and nothing more

Cold patch is asphalt aggregate coated with a binder that stays workable at ambient temperature. It comes in bags or in bulk, it goes into the hole with a shovel, and it gets compacted with a plate compactor, a roller, or in a pinch a truck tire. No heat, no specialized equipment, no waiting on a plant.

What it is good for is immediate hazard control. A hole that opened up over a weekend at an apartment property, a gap at the edge of a drive approach that a delivery truck is going to drop a wheel into on Monday morning, a hole in a driveway that a homeowner does not want a visitor to trip in. Cold patch turns a hazard into a bump in about ten minutes, and that is a real and useful thing.

What it is not is a repair. Cold patch does not fuse with the asphalt around it. It sits in the hole as a separate mass held there by compaction and friction, and the boundary between patch and pavement stays a boundary. Water goes down that seam. In our climate the binder also stays soft through the summer, so traffic works the material loose, kicks it out, and spreads it around. By the second summer the hole is usually back, often wider than it started, because the broken edges kept breaking while the patch was absorbing traffic instead of resisting it.

So the honest use of cold patch is as a placeholder. We will put it in when a property needs safety today and a real repair has to wait for scheduling, weather or a decision on the wider area. We are just clear with owners that the clock on it is short.

Hot mix surface patching: the workhorse repair

Hot mix patching is the method most people mean when they picture a proper pothole repair. The failed material is removed, the hole is squared up so the patch has clean vertical edges rather than a feathered bowl, the surfaces are tacked, hot asphalt is placed in the hole, and it is compacted in lifts while it is still hot enough to work.

The reason it lasts is the combination of two things. The tack coat and the heat allow the new material to bond to the existing asphalt at the edges, so you get something much closer to a continuous surface than a plug sitting in a socket. And the compaction while hot gets the mix to the density it was designed for, which is what gives asphalt its strength and its resistance to water intrusion.

Squaring the hole matters more than people expect. A round pothole with sloped, crumbling sides gives the patch nothing to press against, and the thinnest material sits right at the edges where traffic hits it hardest. Cutting the repair into a rectangle with vertical faces puts full-thickness material at the perimeter and lets the roller actually compact against something. A patch that was cut square and one that was not can look identical on the day they are finished and be two very different repairs eighteen months later.

Hot mix surface patching is the right answer when the failure is in the surface course and the base below is sound. It is not the right answer when the base is the problem, because you are placing good material on top of bad and the bad material will win.

Infrared patching: seamless, but narrow in scope

Infrared repair takes a different route to the same goal. Instead of removing the old asphalt, a heater unit warms the failed area in place until the existing material is pliable. The softened asphalt is raked out, fresh hot mix and rejuvenator are blended into it, and the whole area is recompacted as one mass.

The appeal is the joint, or rather the absence of one. Because the existing pavement is heated and reworked rather than cut, a good infrared repair blends into the surrounding surface with no seam for water to enter. It also produces a tidier looking result on a visible surface, which matters on a storefront lot or a residential driveway where the repair sits in plain view.

The limits are real, though. Infrared only works on the depth it can heat, which means it addresses surface distress and shallow failures, not structural ones. It works best on raveled areas, shallow depressions, bad seams and small isolated holes. Contaminated asphalt does not respond well either, so an area soaked in oil or fuel is not a candidate. And wind, which Lea County has in abundance, pulls heat off the unit and makes the process slower and less consistent on exposed properties.

Used inside its range, infrared is an excellent tool. Used on a hole that is really a base failure, it produces the nicest looking patch you will ever see fail in the same place the following year.

Full-depth repair: the one that actually ends it

Full-depth repair is what you do when the structure below has failed. The repair area is saw cut into a clean rectangle extending past the visible damage into sound pavement, the asphalt is removed, and the compromised base and subgrade below it are dug out until you reach material that is firm and dry.

Then it gets rebuilt from the bottom. Aggregate base goes back in lifts and each lift gets compacted, because base placed in one thick dump never reaches proper density no matter how long a roller sits on it. On areas where the subgrade is genuinely bad, geotextile fabric may go under the aggregate to separate the layers and keep fines from migrating up into the base. Once the base is back to grade and tested, the asphalt goes back in lifts, tacked at the vertical faces, compacted hot.

It takes longer and it costs more labor than any of the other three, and it is the only one of the four that permanently ends a recurring pothole caused by a base failure. On heavy-truck properties around Hobbs — oilfield yards, service company lots, anywhere loaded vehicles turn in the same spot every day — it is frequently the only repair worth doing, because those loads will find any weakness a shallower repair leaves behind. Full-depth is also the moment to fix the water. If a low spot is feeding the failure, the repair can be built to drain rather than simply rebuilt to match a grade that never worked. Skipping that step means doing an expensive repair correctly and then watching the same cause go to work on it.

How we choose, and what happens afterward

The short version of the decision is this. Shallow surface failure with sound base gets a hot mix patch. Shallow raveling, bad seams or small cosmetic failures on a visible surface get infrared. A hole with soft, wet or pumping material under it gets full-depth, and the area is cut wider than the hole looks. Anything that needs to stop being a hazard before the real repair can be scheduled gets cold patch in the meantime.

Two other things shape the plan. The first is how many holes there are. A lot with a dozen scattered failures and widespread interconnected cracking is not a patching project at all, and treating it as one means paying for patches on a surface that is going to be milled and resurfaced anyway. At a certain density of failure, the money belongs in resurfacing with full-depth repairs done first in the bad areas.

The second is season. Hot mix is easiest to get and easiest to place well in spring and fall here. In July and August, surface temperatures on a Hobbs lot run far above air temperature, which keeps a patch soft longer and means we schedule work early in the day and keep traffic off it longer. Monsoon moisture matters too, since neither tack nor hot mix goes down on a wet surface. None of that stops the work, it just shapes the calendar.

Afterward, the maintenance that protects a repair is unglamorous and effective. Keep water out. Fill cracks before they open into holes, keep the lot draining where it was designed to drain, and keep the surface sealed so the asphalt around the patch does not oxidize and ravel into the next failure. If you have a hole opening up in your driveway in the middle of July and you want to keep a tire from dropping into it, that is exactly what the product is for. What it will not do is last. Cold patch does not bond to the surrounding asphalt the way hot mix does, and in the Permian Basin heat the binder stays soft, so traffic pushes the material out of the hole and spreads it across the surface. You end up sweeping loose aggregate off your driveway and looking at the same hole a few months later, only now the edges are more broken than they were. The practical approach is to treat bagged patch as a safety measure with a short shelf life, and to schedule the permanent repair for a shoulder season when hot mix is easy to get and the surface temperature is working for you rather than against you.
